Steve’s Top 5

1)   Blade Runner

The neo-noir sci-fi film depicts a dystopian future in which genetically engineered androids, appearing indistinguishable from humans, are created for the sole purposes of menial, dangerous work on off world colonies. Any android that defies its ‘sole purpose’ by returning to earth is  ‘retired’ by Blade Runners. The plot focuses on a group of defiant androids and a Blade Runner who reluctantly agrees to take on the assignment. Deemed as culturally, historically and aesthetically significant by the Library of Congress, Blade Runner is hailed for its production design and thematic complexity.

Starring: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos

Director: Ridley Scott

Genre: Science Fiction, Drama, Neo-noir

2)   Apocalypse Now

The screenplay is inspired by the novel, A Heart of Darkness, that turns the fable into a 20th century epic war film about neocolonialism. The story depicts some political issues, such as pressures that took Western nations into Afghanistan and Iraq, and the assault on Abbottabad are found in the narrator’s journey.

3)   Forrest Gump

If you haven’t already seen it, this award winning film is defiantly on the must-watch list. Awarded Best Picture in 1995, the film follows the heartfelt life of a slow witted, good natured and exceptional athlete Forrest Gump. The story takes place between 1944 and 1982, as the protagonist experiences, and occasionally influences, some of the defining moments in America’s latter half of the 20th century.

Starring: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinsie

Director: Robert Zemeckis

Genre: Drama, Comedy

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPIEn0M8su0

4)   Pulp Fiction

If it wasn’t for the release of Forrest Gump, this striking film would have taken home Best Picture. The highly stylized story is unlike anything done before. Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, the film connects intersecting storylines of Los Angeles mobsters, fringe players, low-life criminals, and a mysterious briefcase. The title, Pulp Fiction, refers to the mid 20th century pulp magazines and hardboiled crime novels. The paperbacks were known for their graphic violence and terse dialogue, as is the film.

Starring: John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth, Uma Thurman

Director: Quentin Tarantino,

Genre: Drama, Crime, Black Comedy

5)   Predator

If you ever have been exposed to a meme, than you’ve probably seen one of Arnold Schwarzengger wrestling an alien predator. Predator begins with a special elite team sent on a rescue mission to retrieve an American diplomat from the South American jungle. However, the film takes a twist as they end up dueling to the death with a ‘predator’ from outer space.

Starring: Arnold Schwarzengger, Shane Black, Carl Weathers, Kevin Peter Hall

Director: John McTiernan

Genre: Science Fiction, Horror

Mackenzie’s Top 5

1)   Star Wars – A New Hope

Released in 1977, the Sci-Fi series was not only renowned for its box-office success, but had won over its audience with its screenplay and epic special effects. Star Wars is something of a landmark for Sci-Fi film making, with its comical characters, allusions, and spectacular show of space travel, crafts, and galactic adventures.

Starring: Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill

Director: George Lucas

Genre: Sci-Fi, Action, Adventure, Thriller, Fantasy

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g3_CFmnU7k

2)   The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey

The pre-quill to Lord of the Rings, the screenplay is a fantastical show of special effects, animation and adventure. The tale tells enormous lessons from little hobbits, using an exciting storyline with themes of friendship, the humbleness of home, and greed for wealth - the Dragon Sickness.

3)   Lord of the Rings – Fellowship of the Ring

Since JRR Tolkien’s original novel published in the 1950s, its influence has been notorious in pop-culture. Through interesting characters and a visually fantastical screenplay, the story eloquently tells tales of greed and the corruption of power, heroism when facing adversity, and the humility of hobbits.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V75dMMIW2B4

4)   A Princess Bride

The quirky, cheesy fairy tale pokes fun at many of the classic ‘love at first site’ stories. More of a parody than a fairy tale, the film will either spellbound its viewers or make them laugh with epic sword play, madcap adventures, and humorous dialogue.

Starring: Carry Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, Chris Sarandon

Director: Rob Reiner

Genre: Romance, Fantasy, Adventure, Comedy

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYgcrny2hRs

5)   Avatar

As I’m sure you’ve heard, the sci-fi film takes a twist from the usual ‘invasion, apocalypse’ with humans being the so called 'aliens.' A truly beautiful and epic screenplay, the film explains how humans have destroyed the natural beauty of their own plant, and now seek to mine Pandora. Cameron succeeds in making his viewers truly loath the human race, siding with the indigenous species, Na’vi, as they fight to save their home.

Avatar is worth a watch not simply because of its storyline, but was a marker for 3D special effects. Since its debut, the film took animation to a whole new level.

Starring: Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver,

Director: James Cameron

Genre: Science Fiction, Action, Adventure

The Story Behind Gotham Studios's Logo

We often get asked about our a unique and memorable looking logo, and why we chose such a design. What many people don’t know is that the design is actually a universal symbol for creation called the “Seed of Life,” also referred to as the seven circles.

The “Seed of Life” is an ancient geometrical symbol. Some say that it is depicting the seven days of creation. Each circle represents a stage or step of creation. It has appeared in many ancient religious structures around the world. Depictions of the seven circles can be found in a number of ancient cities. For example, the oldest known depiction of the circle is found in the Temple of Osiris in Abydos, Egypt where it appears to be burned into the rock formation of the temple. Another depiction of the circle can be found in The Forbidden City of Beijing. The symbol is edged underneath the paw of the “Fu-Dog” or “Guardian Lion.” The sacred circle is also found in ancient synagogues in the Galilee and in Masada, Israel. It is found in various ancient temples of Japan, the City of Ephesus and Izmir in Turkey, the Harimandir Sahib (Golden Temple) and the Ajanta Buddhist Temples in India, as well as Cordoba in ‘la Mezquita’ Spain.

In addition to its religious roots, the symbol is well known for its geometrical shape. Architects, philosophers, alchemists, and artists have studied the perfect form, proportion and harmony of the symbol. One of the most notable being Leonardo da Vinci, who’s studies of the symbol’s mathematical properties drew some of the first known terms and theories: “Seed of Life,” “Flower of Life,” and “Fruit of Life.” The seven circles of the “Seed of Life” evolves into the “Fruit of Life,’” which is said to be the blue print for the universe, containing the basis for the design of every atom, molecular structure, life form, and everything in existence. It is for this reason we chose it as our logo and symbol for what our work represents, and the stages we go through to achieve perfection to every project we create. The seven circles of our logo represent the seven steps we take when creating our work, essentially the blue print for every project

Here at Gotham, our seven-circle process has a distinct brand quality that emphasizes our style and culture.

A Collage of our Time Lapse from Taiwan

Filmed in Taipei City by producer Steve Domjancic, the time-lapse piece showcases various scenes from the city’s urban, lively, and remarkable metropolis. Here at Gotham Studios we are about telling stories through compelling visuals, and time-lapse is an exciting way of doing so. By speeding up the images, a good time-lapse is able to captivate its viewer by expressing the lengthy scene in a matter of seconds. But without a unique subject, great camera, and interesting action, time-lapse on its own isn’t inherently interesting. A true artist is able to spot the unique scene, and be willing to push the boundaries to capture something original.

The GORGEOUS shots from our Cineplex shoot this summer

This summer we were happy to work on another Cineplex shoot. The shoot was 2 days, or shall we say nights because that's what we have to do to get a movie theatre to ourselves. So 2 overnights, 1 of which was for photography, and the other night was for video. We can't show you the videos yet, but we did get permission to show you some of the amazing photos. Commercial photoshoots are no easy task. We had great talent on this one, both on camera and behind. Thank you to everyone who was part of this, you know who you are!

Here's a glimpse into our shoot with Cineplex over the summer in Toronto. Some lovely people, food and drinks. Take a look at some of the photography. Each character has their own story to tell. Stay tuned for the videos! (Can you guess who the 4 characters are?)

White Widow - Our Branded Content Short Film

White Widow is versatile short film created by Gotham Studios as a proof of concept to show agencies and companies an alternative to high budget productions. Our short film can take your product/brand and turn into a cinematic short film that will entertain your audience and have them wanting more.

It's designed specifically for web and social platforms and can easily be incorporated into any 360 campaign. We wanted to make it easy for everyone, so we've built this product to be scaleable depending on your needs. Everything included, our content branded short films will start at $10,000/day, and that includes all talent, styling, crew and post production.

The biggest advantage short films such as this have is that they cost much less than a typical TV commercial production, without the sacrifice of quality. Best of all, they are entertaining and will keep your audience engaged, with a very high chance of sharing. If you're in charge of marketing at your brand or you're a creative director seeking assets for your client, this is the most cost effective way to generate some hype.

The Passion Project is HERE! We bring you White Widow - Gotham's first Short

It's been a long time coming, and it's finally here. The passion project that we we filmed at the end of the year is ready for your viewing. But before we show it to you, let us give you a little backstory on how this all came to be....

Not that long ago, in a city not that far away, 2 photographers joined forces and started Gotham Studios and their first year working as a team they were able to grow their combined 2014 revenues by 1750%, so you can say we got a little busy last year. We completed 79 projects, moved into our SoHo property where we could be close to all the great ad agencies near by, and basically had no time left to do anything for ourselves, creatively. We knew that all the equipment and experience we attained from all the events, weddings and commercial projects that we did had to be put to the test. A challenge was created! We reached out to our network to see who wanted to be involved and created a 24 hour window of opportunity to get all the filming done. We were curious to see what we could make and how much fun we could have, and so White Widow was born.

A lot of London businesses and people helped make this all possible, so we are forever grateful for all the help and support that we got. In no particular order, a huge thanks goes out to:

And now the moment you have all been waiting for... White Widow

The Passion Project

Gotham Studios has had an amazing year this year, and the only way that we could make it better was to finally take some time to ourselves and film a passion project, one that we've been envisioning for over a year. It all started when a friend of ours purchased a supercar, an Aston Martin DB9 last year. We got a small window of opportunity between other commercial projects this month and challenged ourselves to see what we could make in one day. With the help of a great team, great weather and amazing talent we managed to pull it off. That means that in the next month or two we will present White Widow, a short film about a classy and sexy spy that needs to keep a very important package safe. Keep your eyes peeled this winter for more details.

A huge thanks goes out to everyone involved that made this all possible. In no particular order, thank you to:

Sifton Properties for letting us use One London Place

Hangar9 for a fabulous wardrobe for our star

Black Friars Salon for the best looking French Manicure and Pedicure in town

The Spectacle Company for letting us use the hottest pair of Fendi shades we have seen.

La Senza at White Oaks Malls for everything that you don't see ;)

The St. Thomas Municipal Airport for being great sports and letting us film on the taxi ways.

Rick Spencer, London's premier hair stylist for giving everyone some sweet dos.

Catherine Krahn Makeup Artistry for doing a fantastic job on makeup.

Barry MacKenzie, the stunt driver, lingerie pro, and lighting expert. You the man Barry!

The Station Park Inn for letting us use their sweet downtown hotel.

Joshua Fairweather for providing us with the wardrobe for our villain and making him look super sharp.

Lyndsie Brandt, you rocked it! We're going to make you famous!

Josh Medina, you make a really good villain! Let's get you casted in more projects.

Jesse Hopps from Demand Metric for letting us use his sweet ride, the DB9

And last but not least, our 2 amazing staff Kaila and Dan. You are both wonderful. Kaila, your work is about to begin ;)

We couldn't have done it with out everyone's support! You are all amazing and you helped us bring our vision to life. We hope that it leads to more projects that we can all work together on, as we make a great team.

LinkedIn Professional Portraits

You probably have a LinkedIn profile, everyone does. But not everyone looks their best. The value of having a professional looking portrait on LinkedIn is more important than you'd think. People are checking you out on there everyday, and if you are a part of a professional organization you have to look your best, there are no excuses. If you don't believe, just ask the folks at Photo Feeler. They have invested a lot of research and found that a professional head shot gets you hired and promoted faster. Not only that, but it also casts a professional light on the organization that you work for.

A professional portrait doesn't have to be boring, it can be fun too. At our small boutique studio located in SoHo London, we take head shots to a whole new level. There's a lot of diversity in portraits, and it can all depend on what you do, who you are and how you like to dress. Usually we like to talk to our clients before hand a learn a little bit about them. This helps us all choose a style together that will be both effective and beautiful.

If you're curious, call us. It's time to take down that selfie and upload something fresh and beautiful. We are looking forward to meeting with you. 519-679-4895 - mention this blog post and we will take 10% off.
